4 Beaches in Phuket That You Should Visit During the Rainy Season

It can be disappointing to schedule your Phuket vacation in the month of July, only to find out that the date falls during Thailand’s rainy season. The southwest monsoon will make Phuket’s west coasts rough, limiting your beach days. Unfortunately, the west coast is where the most exquisite sand (and more popular resorts) are found. No one wants to give up and stay indoors during their entire tropical island vacation. You still want your vacation money to be worth it, without sacrificing your safety.

Fear not — your tropical island dreams can still very much come to life when you’re well informed! Keep reading to learn more about a few beaches in Phuket that you should most definitely head to, even when dark clouds threaten your fun.

Places to visit despite the rains

You can push through with your vacation in Phuket even when it’s raining, although you have to understand that there will be some adjustments to make your stay worth your money and time. For one, you should expect and acknowledge that you won’t have as many chances to take a dip in Phuket’s famed beaches in the west, given the rough seas during these months.

With that framework in mind, you would have to do some extensive research. Fortunately, Phuket is a big island, and there are many beautiful and safe places you can still visit along the coast, as well as inland. The famous west coast is just one of the four cardinal directions (north, south, and east). You will soon see that the west coast is overrated, considering what Phuket has to offer.

Southwest: Paradise Beach Phuket

Although Phuket’s west coast is more prone to the incoming monsoon-triggered waves, some small pockets in the west coast are relatively shielded from strong waves, thanks to the terrain. One of these beaches is Paradise Beach Phuket, which lies within a cove shielded by a limestone headland to its west. With rocky outcrops providing cover against incoming waves, the water in the bay is relatively calm even during the rainy season. As a consequence of its geography, it has fine sands as well even with the rocky limestone outcrops to its west. This beach also has basic amenities you need, such as beach chairs. Note that the beach owners charge at least ฿200 (around US$7 or €6) entrance fee per person.

Southeast: Ao Yon Beach

Found in Cape Panwa in Phuket’s southeast, this beach offers fine sand and relatively calm seas. The good thing about Ao Yon Beach is that it is not very crowded even during peak season, so expect to be able to enjoy relaxing strolls along the beach without much noise. This place is also preferable for those who would want to have an absolute “me time” because of the complete serenity it offers. The downside with Ao Yon Beach is that the deposit of fine sands are not as thick as those in Phuket’s west and the sandy strip is narrower. The flat, broad rock platforms can also be slippery during the rains.

South: Rawai Beach and Laem Ka beach

Straight south along Phuket’s West Road lies Rawai beach. Although it is mostly known as a boat harbor, the flat and wide shore is the reason why the fishers place their boats there as it helps dissipate the energy of the monsoon waves that come from afar. You can see evidence of that relatively calm waters with the fine sands that line Rawai’s shores, as sands of those grain sizes only manage to settle in areas where waves are gentler. The bonus is that you get to have closer access to seafood that local fishers have freshly caught offshore.

North: Haad Pak Phra Beach

When people leave Phuket towards mainland Thailand in the north, they tend to miss out on beaches that lie along Phuket’s northern coastline. One such beach is Haad Pak Phra Beach, which can be accessed by passing through Hat Pak Phra street, then turning left along the Thepaksatree Road when going northward. You can also cross Sarasin bridge and walk westward along the coast until you see two red and white towers in the horizon that mark the relative location of Haad Pak Phra Beach.

Like Rawai, you also get to enjoy the freshest seafood, although it might feel too rundown and rustic for some people who are used to flashy hotel resorts. If you’re looking for a local experience, however, the simplicity of local residents’ lives makes it even more relaxing as does the isolation of Ao Yon beach and remains a perfect beach getaway in Phuket despite the rains.
